DIS>Play: Köken Ergun – Wedding, 2007

In Wedding, the Berlin district that is home to one of the city’s largest Turkish communities, Köken Ergun spent a long while in 2006/7 documenting the wedding celebrations of Turkish and Kurdish migrants, producing a 3-channel video installation from the film material. Underlayed with a great deal of snappy music, Ergun put together various aspects of the wedding ritual – beginning with the women at hair and beauty salons to the announcement of the monetary presents received and the exuberant dances of the wedding guests – into a multifaceted collage. In the process, Ergun’s documentation poses the question concerning how individual and collective identities form and are visualised in the complex structure of tradition, the present and diverse cultures.
